The Mapei SpA (proper spelling: MAPEI ) is an international Italian producer of construction chemical products for the installation of wall and floor coverings.
The name Mapei is an acronym for " Materiali Ausiliari Per l'Edilizia e l'Industria " (German: " Auxiliary materials for construction and industry "). The Mapei Group currently has 70 plants with around 9500 employees in 32 countries. The company's total turnover in 2017 was around 2.4 billion euros.
history
On February 12, 1937, Rodolfo Squinzi , the ninth of eleven children, founded the Mapei company on the outskirts of Milan . At the beginning, three employees produced colored plasters and materials for the interior cladding of residential buildings, hospitals and airports.
After World War II , Mapei focused on building adhesives , especially tile adhesives . Rodolfo Squinzi, later together with his son Giorgio , who has a doctorate in chemistry, was responsible for improving the products. The investments in research and development formed the basis for the beginning internationalization of the company, which began in 1978 with the establishment of a branch in Canada . The expansion on five continents was continued in the following years and substantiated by the establishment of production facilities in strategically located locations on the world market. Around 21,000 tons of construction chemical products are produced around the world every day, and around 65,000 customers are supplied with them.
Mapei Germany
Mapei Germany is based in Großostheim , Bavaria , and production is in Weferlingen / Saxony-Anhalt . Uwe Gruber is the managing director in Germany. Mapei has three subsidiaries in Germany. These are Rasco Bitumentechnik in Augustdorf , Sopro Bauchemie in Wiesbaden and Mapei GmbH in Großostheim . The latter has been on the market since the 1990s and has around 200 employees. This includes a production facility in Weferlingen ( Saxony-Anhalt ).
In Germany, Mapei offers a range of construction chemical products for tile and natural stone laying, flooring technology, building materials and concrete admixtures. This includes products for laying ceramics and natural stone as well as products for laying textile and elastic floor coverings. In addition, there are products for laying conductive coverings, adhesives for parquet , but also screed binders and high-speed screeds.
Research and Development
More than 1000 people are employed in research and development in 31 centers around the world to develop solutions for construction. Mapei invests around 5% of sales in research and development every year. Around 70% of this is used to develop sustainable products and systems.
For this reason, Mapei has focused its research on the development of safe products for the environment, processors and end users. Examples of this are the products in the ECO line that bear the " Emicode EC1 - very low-emission" logo. Mapei has also launched a global initiative for sustainable building under the heading of “Green Innovation”. One of the criteria in this process are the various rating systems for sustainable building. One of the best-known is the American LEED system , which rates buildings according to a point system. The importance of these rating systems is shown by the fact that institutional investors from the financial sector prefer to invest in certified buildings in order to minimize the risk.
