Sport Club Siracusa is an Italian football club from Syracuse . The club was founded in 1924 and plays its home games at the Stadio Nicola De Simone , which can seat 4,500 spectators. US Siracusa has played in Serie B for seven years and is currently in the Eccellenza Sicilia , the sixth highest division in Italy .

history

Unione Sportiva Siracusa was founded in 1924 in Syracuse , the fourth largest city in Sicily after Palermo , Catania and Messina . The club spent the first few years primarily in the Prima Divisione Sud, the highest regional league in southern Italy. In the 1937/38 season they won the championship of Sicily with a 2-2 and 3-1 success in the final against US Palermo and thus qualified for the Serie C, Italy's third soccer league. Here the US Siracusa played very well and already finished second in Group H in the first third division season, eight points behind Catania Calcio , who made it to Serie B after playoff games . In the following four years Syracuse came second three times behind Taranto Calcio , Palermo and Catania respectively. 1940/41 they even reached first place in Group H of Serie C and took part in the playoffs for promotion to Serie B, but were only slightly defeated by AC Prato and Pro Patria Calcio .

After the forced break for football in Italy caused by the Second World War , the most successful phase in the history of US Siracusa began in the 1940s and 1950s. In the qualification phase 1945/46 Syracuse was able to achieve the promotion for the Serie B 1946/47 and played in the mentioned season for the first time in the second class. With twelfth place, relegation was only secured by a lead of one point over the first relegated Alba Roma. The following season is still the most successful in the history of US Siracusa. In the Girone C of Serie B, the team finished fifth and missed the jump to Serie A by only six points to US Palermo. Renowned clubs like AC Anconitana , Ternana Calcio or AC Perugia were left behind. Siracusa finished fifth a second time in the 1950/51 season, just behind SPAL Ferrara , AC Legnano , both of whom rose, as well as FC Modena and US Livorno . Two years later, these great years in the club's history were over and the US Siracusa rose after five years in second class by a seventeenth and penultimate place only in front of FC Lucca back in the C series.

To this day, the promotion to Serie B did not succeed. After fifteen years in Serie C, the club even fell into Serie D in 1968 , which was then the fourth division. After a brief upswing in the late 1970s with winning the Series C cup competition in 1979 and a few years in Series C1, the US Siracusa even rose to the Eccellenza , the second highest Italian amateur league, by 1995 . The club was then re-founded and was active in this regional league until 2002 before making the leap back to Serie D. In five of the next six years, Siracusa failed in the venture of promotion to the C2 series only in the playoffs. In 2008/09 they finally came first in Girone I and went straight to the top. In the first year in the Lega Pro Seconda Divisione , the former Series C2, the US Siracusa managed to march through to the Lega Pro Prima Divisione , they rose together with Juve Stabia , Atletico Roma , the SS Barletta Calcio and Gela Calcio in the third League on. There they managed to stay in the league in 2010/11 with ninth place.

After the US Siracusa missed promotion to Serie B in the 2011/12 season in the promotion playoffs - the team lost in the semi-finals of the SS Virtus Lanciano - the club was excluded from all professional leagues in July 2012 for financial reasons . Under the name Associazione Sportiva Dilettantistica Città di Siracusa , the team took part in the Terza Categoria , the lowest league level in Italy, in the 2012/13 season and secured promotion to the ninth class Seconda Categoria at the end of the season . Since the sporting title of AC Palazzolo 1954 - which was relegated to the sixth class Eccellenza Sicilia - was transferred in June 2013 Siracusa , the club continued to play in the sixth highest league level under the name Sport Club Siracusa .
