Culture and sights

The “green lake” in the Etroit valley

The Clarée valley and the Étroite valley, which is partly in Italy, are classified as site classé ('Natural Monument'), and the area is classified as particularly important by the Natura 2000 network . The area has an area of 25,000 hectares and forms a bioclimatic crossing point between three different mountain ranges in the Alps. It has more than a thousand species of plants . Biodiversity is endangered by the fact that agriculture and especially the mowing is becoming less important. In some places there is overgrazing by sheep, in other places too many larches grow . Another problem is tourism.

Névache is a stage on the “red trail” of the Via Alpina long-distance hiking trail . In the hamlets of Sallé and Ville Basse, former farms from the 19th century serve as gîte d'étape ('accommodation for stages').

Névache is represented with two flowers in the Conseil national des villes et villages fleuris ('National Council of Flowered Cities and Villages'). The "flowers" are awarded in the course of a regional competition, whereby a maximum of three flowers can be achieved.

Entrance of the Sainte-Marie chapel

There are 24 chapels in the municipality . 15 of them bear an inscription from the year in which they were built or were mentioned in the archives. Most of the chapels date from the end of the 18th century. Four of the chapels are isolated, the others are in inhabited hamlets or alpine pastures . In the hamlet of Foncouverte is the Sainte-Marie chapel, classified as a Monument historique ('historical monument'), it was built in 1627. The Notre-Dame-des-Grâces chapel in the hamlet of Plampinet is also classified as a historic monument.

The Saint-Hippolyte chapel

The Saint-Hippolyte chapel is included in the supplementary directory of the Monuments historiques . It was built in the 15th century. Today it stands isolated on the orographic left bank of the Clarée. Originally there was a hamlet there, the ruins of which were still visible at the beginning of the 20th century. According to local oral tradition, it is said to have served the residents of the village as a parish church before the church of Saint-Marcellin-Saint-Antoine was built.

The Saint-Sébastien church in the hamlet of Plampinet was built in the 16th century. The sacristy dates from 1635. The cemetery was established in 1745. The church is classified as a monument historique .

Economy and Infrastructure

There is a bakery and two sporting goods shops in the community. The nearest train station is in Briançon, the nearest airport in Gap. Névache is on route national 94 from Gap to Montgenèvre .
