L'Argentière-la-Bessée is a French commune with 2,279 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Hautes-Alpes in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur .
The name comes from a nearby silver mine that has been exploited since the Middle Ages and abandoned in 1908. The second part of the name comes from the municipality of la Bessée, which was incorporated. In addition to the silver mine, numerous other buildings from the Middle Ages and modern times have been preserved, such as a striking clock tower from the 20th century.
