Sergio Chiamparino
Sergio Chiamparino (born September 1, 1948 in Moncalieri , Piedmont ) is an Italian politician of the social democratic Partito Democratico . Chiamparino was President of the Piedmont Region from 2014 to 2019 . From 2001 to 2011 he was mayor of the city of Turin .
Career
Chiamparino comes from a working class family. He graduated from a business school and then studied political science at the University of Turin . After his military service in the mountain artillery , he returned to the university in 1975 to begin an academic career. At the same time, as a member of the Italian Communist Party, he was chairman of the local council in his hometown Moncalieri. In the further course he took on various party offices in the Piedmontese KPI as well as leading positions in the trade union federation CGIL . In 1991 he headed the PDS successor party to the KPI in the province of Turin and then in the Piedmont region. In 1993 he became a city councilor in Turin, and in 1996 he moved to the Camera dei Deputati in Rome as a member of parliament .
In 2001 Sergio Chiamparino was elected mayor of Turin and in 2006 was confirmed with a two-thirds majority for another five years. The 2006 Winter Olympics were a central part of his work . He also held various party offices at national level and from 2009 to 2011 headed the Association of Italian Municipalities ANCI. In 2011 Chiamparino left local politics because Italian local law did not allow a third term as mayor of Turin. From 2012 to 2014 he headed the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation . On May 25, 2014, he won 47 percent of the vote in the direct elections for the office of President of the Piedmont Region.
