My Geisha (English Original Title: My Geisha) is an American film directed by Jack Cardiff from 1962 .

action

Paul Robaix (Montand) is a well-known Hollywood director. He has made many successful films with his wife, the famous actress Lucy Dell (MacLaine). Now he wants to make a film without her, in order to prove to the audience and to himself that he can make great films without her. In order not to hurt Lucie's feelings, he would like to shoot a new version of Madame Butterfly , as Lucy with blue eyes and red hair is not suitable as a performer of the geisha . But the studio managers refuse to support the expensive film financially because the box office magnet Lucy Dell does not play. Because Paul has already left for Japan, Lucy and production manager Sam Lewis (Robinson) have to follow him. To surprise Paul, Lucy disguises herself as a geisha, whereupon he hires her for the role of Madame Butterfly, since he does not recognize her. Lucy, who really enjoys this role play, gets involved. And the studio managers who are planning to present Lucy Dell as Madame Butterfly as a premiere surprise also agree to finance the film. Paul is excited about the geisha named Yoko Mori . Her male co-star (Cummings) falls in love with her and wants to make her his fifth wife, while Paul wishes Lucy were a little more like the geisha.

But when looking at the negatives , Paul recognizes who is hiding behind Yoko Mori due to color errors (Lucie's black contact lenses appear blue and her black wig red). He thinks Lucy is doing all this to steal the show from him, and he decides to finish the film without telling her that he saw through her, but then parted ways with Lucy.

To hurt her, he makes advances to Yoko Mori and even kisses her passionately. Lucy, who thinks Paul is trying to cheat her with Yoko, is desperate and doesn't know what to do. The supposedly first reunion between Lucy and Paul at the premiere of the film is cool as Paul is disappointed with Lucy - and she with him too.

The film is extremely well received by the audience and even promises to bring it an Oscar . Just as Lucy disguises herself as a geisha in order to be presented as Yoko Mori alias Lucy Dell at the end of the film, she receives a present from her friend, a real geisha. It is a fan printed with the words “Nothing comes before you, my love, not even me!”. Lucy realizes what she has to do and enters her when everyone is expecting to see Yoko Mori as herself and tells the astonished audience that the leading actress will not appear for the premiere, she wants to go to a monastery and therefore one will never see you again. Paul is touched by what his wife is doing for him and he tells her on stage as they bow that he loves her and that he knew she was Yoko Mori. Lucy is overjoyed.
