Life

Mayerhofer first completed an apprenticeship as a screen printer . In the technique of artistic screen printing, he works on the production of the printed works of the op art pioneer Victor Vasarely and the Bauhaus teacher Josef Albers . From 1973 to 1976 he studied painting, graphics and design in Munich. From 1976 he worked as a freelance graphic designer with a studio in Ingolstadt . Under his direction, logos and image concepts for industry such as Audi and BMW were developed. In 1993 he moved to Les Issambres in the south of France and opened a studio there.

Works

His painted pictures are mostly unique . For his serigraphs based on acrylic and pastels, he draws on his experience as a screen printer. In his current creative period, the painter discovered the advantages of colored chalk and thus also uses the surface structure of the canvas. The color of the background shines through the structured surface. The pastel pencil creates compositions whose colored surfaces are animated by a colored vibration.

Abstract expressionism

“Feux aux Issambres” 2003 by Willi Mayerhofer, acrylic on canvas 70 × 50 cm

The color and the light are the focus of his work. His theme is also nature as an act of creation. He seeks her closeness in order to at the same time distance himself from her in his pictures. Oriented towards reality, expressions of overwhelming spontaneity and emotionality arise, which almost culminate in the unreal. Carlo Carrà provides the psychological explanation for the possible conversion of emotional states into color qualities : “ Making emotional vibrations visible requires the materiality of the representational to be abolished ”, ie a transformation of what has been seen and experienced into energy and color.

Image selection, image description

“Sturm am Meer” 1999 by Willi Mayerhofer, acrylic on canvas 70 × 100 cm

The picture Sturm am Meer (acrylic on canvas 70 × 100 cm) lets the viewer experience the anger of the sea, the elemental force of the wave, one is in the middle of the troubled sea, caught in contradicting emotions, one hears the infernal din of the breaking wave, you can feel the roaring wind. A different kind of force of nature depicted in the painting "Feux aux Issambres", 2003 (acrylic on canvas 70 × 50 cm). The colors fire red to black become one of the objective language of emotions with the moods of fear and destruction. The color gestures capture the canvas. A color carpet, like a wall of fire or glowing lava, which covers the surface without wanting to end.
