Toritto is a south-east Italian municipality ( comune ) with 8234 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the metropolitan city of Bari in Apulia . The municipality is located about 21 kilometers southwest of Bari in the Murgia . Accordingly, part of the municipality also belongs to the Parco nazionale dell'Alta Murgia, which has existed since 2004 .

history

Presumably already settled in the times of the Hellenic colonization, the first document testifies to the existence of Toritto in 1069.

Economy and Transport

The area is characterized by agriculture. Almonds and olives in particular are grown here. The former Strada Statale 96 Barese , which is now downgraded to a provincial road, runs through the municipality . The municipality also has a train station on the non-electrified narrow-gauge line (950 mm) from Bari via Matera to Montalbano Jonico .
