Cassano delle Murge is a southern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 14,881 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the metropolitan city of Bari in Apulia . The municipality is located within the Murgia about 27 kilometers southwest of Bari and about 28 northeast of Matera . The nearby forest area Foresta Mercadante (about 10 square kilometers [1083 hectares]) is under protection .
history
The name of the place, which can be traced back to a Cassius , suggests that the origins can be found in a Roman settlement in the area of the Peuketeers . A connecting route between Via Appia and Via Appia Traiana from Bari towards Taranto may have passed through the village .

Cassano delle Murge is a little off the main traffic arteries. Only the autostrada A14 , which connects Taranto with Bari and further with the cities of the Adriatic coast and Emilia-Romagna, can be reached quickly in about six kilometers from Acquaviva delle Fonti . Acquaviva is also the closest train station on the Bari – Taranto railway line .
