Sammichele di Bari (in the local dialect: Sammcchel or U Casal ) is a south- east Italian community ( comune ) in Apulia .

geography

The community has 6221 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located in the metropolitan city of Bari , about 28 kilometers south-southeast of Bari in the Murgia .

history

Two menhirs indicate that people settled here as early as the Bronze Age . The Frassineto settlement was not mentioned in writing until the 12th century.

Economy and Transport

The community is characterized by olive, fruit and wine cultivation (especially for the Primitivo ).

The Strada Statale 100 di Gioia del Colle leads through the municipality from Bari to Taranto .

The municipality has a train station on the Bari – Martina Franca – Taranto railway line .
