The Bari – Barletta railway is a standard-gauge railway in southern Italy . It is operated by the private railway company Ferrotramviaria SpA .

history

The line replaced a narrow-gauge steam tram with a gauge of 750 mm. The current route was opened in 1965. It was also built in sections on the old route of the steam tram, whose operation was discontinued in 1959.

Infrastructure

From the second half of the 1990s, some sections were expanded to double tracks. The second track was put into operation in November 2004 on the Bitonto - Ruvo section , in April 2005 on the Palese - Bitonto section and in January 2006 on the Fesca - Palese section. The section between Ruvo and Corato , like the entire line, should also be doubled , a project that has not been completed to date (2016) for financial reasons.

In some sections the train protection is carried out by telephone communication between the neighboring dispatchers ("blocco telephonico").

Since December 22, 2008, the section within the city of Bari has also been used by the light rail , the Servizio ferroviario metropolitano di Bari .

Incidents

On July 12, 2016, numerous people were killed in a head-on collision between two Ferrotramviaria railcars on the single-track section between the Corato and Andria stations .
