Tomás González (writer)

Tomás González (born March 18, 1950 in Medellín , Colombia ) is a Colombian writer whose literary career began in the 1980s.

Life

Tomás González studied philosophy at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia , was a barman in Bogotá and wrote short stories, novels and poems in the following years. He ran a bicycle repair shop in Miami , Florida , before working as a journalist and translator in New York for 16 years .

His first novel, In the Beginning Was the Sea , received a lot of attention in Latin America. "Unlike his compatriot García Márquez , who rhymes the exotic with the erotic, Tomás González does not confirm any exotic clichés, but deconstructs the current Latin American discourse by exposing the familiar to the unfamiliar - not the other way around."

In 2002 he returned to Colombia and lived for eight years in Chía , a town on the outskirts of Bogotá. Today he lives an hour's drive north of the Colombian capital in Cachipay in the department of Cundinamarca .

Tomás González is a nephew of the Colombian lawyer, writer and philosopher Fernando González Ochoa (1895–1964).
