The Monte Conero ( ˈkɔːnero , also Monte d'Ancona ) is a headland on the Adriatic between Portonovo and Sirolo . The Conero is 572 meters high and the only elevation on the Adriatic coast between Venice and the Gargano .
The name comes from the Greek Komaròs for the strawberry tree that grows on the slopes of the mountain. For plants also include oaks , holm oaks , Aleppo pines and Mediterranean cypresses .
The Conero has been protected as a nature park since 1987. The wild occurrence includes badgers , stone marten , mouse weasel , yellow-bellied toads , peregrine falcons , kingfishers and pale swifts .
