The Senio is a 92 km long river in the province of Ravenna in Italy .

It rises in the Tuscan-Romagna Apennines near Mount Carzolano in the municipality of Palazzuolo sul Senio ( Metropolitan City of Florence ), where it spends its first 12 km, and then flows into the province of Ravenna. It flows into the Reno 6 km northeast of Alfonsine . It is the last right tributary of the Reno before it flows into the Adriatic . The water flow fluctuates between 0.3 and over 500 cubic meters per second with an average value of 10 cubic meters.

The municipalities of Palazzuolo sul Senio ( FI ), Casola Valsenio , Riolo Terme , Castel Bolognese , Solarolo , Lugo , Bagnacavallo , Fusignano and Alfonsine (all RA ) lie on the river .

history

The Romans called the river Simnius. During the Italian campaign in 1797, it was the scene of numerous battles between French and papal troops. Fighting between Germans and Allies also took place here during the Italian campaign of World War II.
