In the winter of 1944/45 and during the Allied spring offensive in April 1945, Alfonsine was the scene of bitter fighting between the Wehrmacht , Resistance and the 8th British Army , at the end of which the city was 70 percent destroyed. The historic center was particularly hard hit. This was first largely destroyed by Allied bombs and then by the German mines.
