In the winter of 1944/45 and during the Allied spring offensive in April 1945, Alfonsine was the scene of bitter fighting between the Wehrmacht , Resistance and the 8th British Army , at the end of which the city was 70 percent destroyed. The historic center was particularly hard hit. This was first largely destroyed by Allied bombs and then by the German mines. In order to enable further expansion of the city in the future and because neighboring communities had extremely narrowed the original location, the center was rebuilt on the other bank of the Senio nac plans by the architect Giuseppe Vaccaro .
