In 1336, Riolo placed itself under the protection of Bologna , who built a castle that subsequently became an important bulwark. In 1500 it was conquered by Cesare Borgia for the Papal State and in 1504 incorporated into the Imola dominion. In 1859 it came to the Kingdom of Italy.
