Cannae

Cannae ( ancient Greek Κάνναι Kannai , Italian Canne della Battaglia , German also Kannä ) was a place in southern Italy ( Apulia ), about 60 km northwest of Bari , near the mouth of the Ofanto .

Possibly found here in 216 BC The famous battle of Cannae between the Romans and the Carthaginians under Hannibal . At that time, Cannae was the most important supply center for the Romans (sea trade).

On October 1, 1018, a battle between Normans and Byzantines took place. This second battle of Cannae ended in defeat for the Normans. Cannae was destroyed by the Normans in 1083 and never rebuilt.

The Antiquarium in Canne della Battaglia displays finds from excavations in the area from prehistoric times, as well as Greek, Roman and medieval finds. The museum has a rich collection of vases with geometric decorations from the 4th to 3rd centuries BC. BC, grave goods from an ancient necropolis near Cannae.
