Master of Forli

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Master of Forli ( Italian: Maestro di Forli) is an unknown painter of the Trecento who worked between 1280 and 1340 in Forlì , in the Emilia-Romagna region in Northern Italy. The master is named after some of his paintings that are now in the Pinacoteca civica di Forlì. It is believed that the master came from Forli. In his painting style, he is still committed to an old tradition that still follows the formalism of Byzantine art . This tradition can also be found, for example, with the Master of Faenza , who worked between 1260 and 1280 and was possibly the teacher of the Master of Forli. In the style of the master of Forli, however, the influence of more recent paintings from Ferrara , Ravenna , Rimini and above all from Venice can be seen . He begins a more vivid representation of the characters. In Rimini, the master of Forli could also have received impulses from Giotto , who worked there around 1300.

A few works can be attributed to the master of Forli:

  • Flagellation of Christ , Metropolitan Museum of Art , New York, inv. 1975.1.79 (Robert Lehman Collection)
