At the source of the Elbe

The Elbe is a 33.7 km long, left and northern tributary of the Eder . It flows in the district of Waldeck-Frankenberg , district of Kassel and Schwalm-Eder district in northern Hesse ( Germany ). The river, which is quite rich in water, is part of the Weser river system .

geography

course

The Elbe rises in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district in the urban area of Waldeck . Its source is in the Old Forest , part of the Waldecker Forest , about 3 km southeast of the Freienhagen district between the Heitzelberg ( 467.4  m above sea  level ) in the west-northwest and the Rabenkopf ( 446.1  m ) in the east-southeast at an altitude of around 413  m .

Initially, the Elbe flows in a wooded area in a north-easterly direction and already after 650 m in Langen Rod into the district of Kassel and the Habichtswald Nature Park . After passing the Hasenmühle and flowing into the Georgengraben coming from the left, it turns right around the wooded basalt cone of the Weidelsberg ( 492.3  m ) with the Weidelsburg near the village of Ippinghausen , a southern district of Wolfhagen . At first it runs parallel to federal highway 251 , which it then crosses again in the village and beyond.

The Elbe then flows past the Mondscheinmühle and, southeast of the Weidelsberg, takes in the Elgersbach, which swells at its southern foot. It runs in a southerly direction into the forest-lined valley near Naumburg , in whose core town the Rehmbach flows from the west from the Waldecker Wald and shortly afterwards the Rennebach. Below the city center, its most important tributary flows into the Spolebach , coming from the Hinterhabichtswälder Kuppen - most recently from the north . After the Ballenbach flows into it, the Elbe touches the Naumburg district of Elbenberg to the west . To the south of the village, the Hahnebach flows from the southwest at Harthmühle . The Elbe then runs east past the Naumburg district of Altendorf . About 900 m south of the village it passes the Beltershausen desert with the Beltershausen castle stable, which is located in a bend in the river . Then it passes east of the Heiligenberg ( 380  m ) and its southeastern foothills Ziegenrück ( 318.2  m ), on which the sandstone rock Riesenstein lies.

A little further south, the Elbe flows past the Hinterberg ( 420.4  m ) to the west, temporarily forming the border with the Schwalm-Eder district . Leaving the Habichtswald nature park, you reach the Fritzlar district of Züschen after the Rodenborn flows into it on the right . Then the river first passes a number of fish ponds, then a little after the small Lohbach flows into the Donar spring and shortly afterwards the paper mill, where it makes a long left curve west around the Lohrberg ( 285  m ). At the grinding mill he reached Geismar , also a district of Fritzlar. He passes Biening ( 221.9  m ) southwest of the village with the Geismar desert near its eastern foot .

Finally , the Elbe flows into the Eder south of Geismar and west above Fritzlar in Porta Hassiaca, west below the Eckerich ( 266  m ). The Büraberg ( 274.9  m ) rises to the south opposite its mouth, which is about 174  m above sea level .

Natural allocation

The Elbe rises in the main natural unit group West Hessisches Bergland (No. 34) and in the main unit Waldecker Wald (340 2 ) in the natural area Old Forest (340 2 .6), which it leaves before Ippinghausen. Then a very short piece flows on the border of the natural area Langer Wald (340 2 .5) in the northwest and the Ippinghäusergrund (with Rauenstein) (341.40) in the southeast, which belongs to the subunit Naumburger Senken und Ridge (341.4) . She leaves the last-mentioned natural area below Naumburg. From then on, it flows to its confluence with the Eder in the Elbergrund natural area (341.41).

Catchment area, watershed and tributaries

The catchment area of the Elbe is 123.47 km².

The headwaters of the Elbe lie on the Diemel-Eder / Fulda / Weser watershed . While the water of the Elbe, which flows in a southerly direction, reaches the Weser through the Eder and Fulda , the water of the Watter , which rises on the other side of the up to 467.4 m high ridge in the Heitzelberg, flows through the Twiste and the Diemel in the Weser.
