The Elberberg Tower (2011)

The Elberberger Türmchen is a former watchtower near Elbenberg , a south-eastern district of Naumburg in the Kassel district , Hesse, which is now used as a lookout tower .

Geographical location

The Elberberger Türmchen is located in the Habichtswald Nature Park on the southeast edge of the upper village of Elbenberg , the former Elberberg , about 40 m east of the tower path, or 200 m east of the district road 111 (Bergstrasse) from Elbenberg to Riede .

The Elbersberg Castle , whose farm buildings, the tower once had, is located about 400 meters northwest (it is accessible privately owned and not publicly).

The construction

The approximately 13 m high, solidly bricked and now plastered round tower has a diameter of 5.2 m and is covered by a conical roof. A pointed arched door on the ground floor leads into the interior, and pointed arched windows with lockable wooden shutters on all three floors let daylight into the building. A stone staircase with 23 steps leads from the ground floor to the 3.75 m higher viewing level on the 1st floor. This room is laid out with wooden floorboards , houses an open fireplace and has four windows through which you can observe the surroundings. The room above is not open to the public.

history

The landowner, politician and well-known forester Rudolph von Buttlar , who from 1834 had the classicistic Elberberg Castle built according to his plans next to the old castle of his ancestors , had a so-called “tower house” built above Elberberg in 1825. It was initially used as accommodation for the guardian of the cherry tree plantation there. Buttlar's grandson Hugo von Buttlar (* 1887) later housed part of his extensive weapons collection in the tower.

Todays use

The tower and the surrounding area were leased and renovated by the city of Naumburg for 35 years in 1987 . It has been freely accessible to the public since 1988 as a lookout tower, at least during the summer months. It offers a good view of Elberberg and the Elbe valley .
