Bernd Methe and Reiner Methe (born June 1, 1964 ; † November 11, 2011 near Empfingen ) were a German handball referee team.

Life

The twin brothers belonged to the Hessian Handball Association and had been referees since 1987. Since 1988 they whistled together as a team. Since 1993 they have been part of the DHB squad and jointly directed 670 Bundesliga games. In 1995 they were appointed to the senior squad. Methe / Methe have been part of the EHF / IHF squad since 1998 and have directed 206 international games. Among other things, they were used at the 2007 Handball World Cup and also whistled at the 2010 European Championship , which took place in Austria from 19 to 31 January . There they were appointed by the EHF to lead the final Croatia against France. Former world handball player and French world champion Nikola Karabatić said of this game : “It was a difficult game, there were a lot of emotions. But the Methes did a great job. You could talk and laugh with them even after the game ”.

In 2009 the managers and managing directors of the Toyota Handball Bundesliga voted the twin brothers the best referee team in 2008/09. In the 2009/10 season they were able to defend this title.

In December 2009 they appeared together as referee at Schlag den Raab . They lived in Vellmar, Hesse, and were both married.

Bernd and Reiner Methe had a fatal accident in a car accident on November 11, 2011. They were on their way to the Sparkassen-Arena in Balingen , where they were supposed to lead the Bundesliga match between HBW Balingen-Weilstetten and SC Magdeburg . They ran into oncoming traffic on federal highway 463 , collided with a truck and died at the scene of the accident. After an investigation, the public prosecutor's office assumes a driving error as the most likely cause of the accident.
