history

On March 21, 1752, Johann Friedrich Pierson (* 1689) was granted the concession for brewing kettle beer. Pierson was the son of a Huguenot family who immigrated from Metz in 1685 . For the time being, the concession limited the brewing of beer to one's own needs in the inn's bar. Since the granting of the concession, the later named "Knallhütte" has been in the possession of Pierson's descendants without interruption.

The name "Knallhütte" probably came about a century and a half ago. The former Frankfurter Strasse led over a slope to the brewery and the inn. The horse-drawn freight wagons had to request help in the form of brewery horses to overcome them. They drew attention to themselves with loud cracking of the whips, hence the name "Knallhütte". In 1755 Dorothea Viehmann , b. Pierson, born in the Knallhütte. After Pierson his son Johann Friedrich Isaak Pierson took over the business. It was followed in 1798 by the brewer Otto Keim, who had been married to Johann Friedrich Isaak's daughter Anna Sabine since 1786. The next owner was Johann Martin Keim, born in 1796 at the Knallhütte. He saw how on April 22, 1809 the Dörnberg uprising was suppressed at the Knallhütte.

In 1814 the Knallhütte was the first stop on the express mail route from Kassel to Frankfurt . From 1846 Karl Keim managed the Knallhütte. On July 7, 1887, all farm buildings were destroyed by arson. During the reconstruction, parts of the old system were restored, the new buildings were built in the style of the time. These two different architectural styles from the centuries still shape the appearance of the Knallhütte today.

Heinrich Keim was born on the Knallhütte on December 12, 1850. He took over the business in 1900. Heinrich Keim bequeathed the brewery to his daughter Helene in 1931, who was married to Franz Bettenhäuser. The brewery was expanded under Franz Bettenhäuser, and the restaurant was given a new look in keeping with the more modern times. When he died in 1945, the brewery and inn were almost completely ruined. His son Karl Bettenhäuser almost had to start over.

In 1977 the company had its 225th anniversary. In 1982 the son of Annemarie and Karl Bettenhäuser, Frank Bettenhäuser, returned to the company after completing his studies. In 1984 he took over the management of the company, on January 1, 1990 the name was changed to Hütt-Brauerei Bettenhäuser KG and on January 1, 2003 to Hütt-Brauerei Bettenhäuser GmbH & Co KG.

The turnover in 2008 was around eight million euros. This was generated by 42 permanent employees. 67,500 hectoliters of beer were brewed, about 30 percent of which was sold as draft beer. In addition, 8,500 hl of non-alcoholic drinks were produced.

The name of the Hütt brewery gained nationwide attention when the Castor transport was blocked on November 8, 2010 by means of an old truck converted by Greenpeace with the brewery's name still there.
