history

The history

Wildside were founded in 1988 in the heyday of so-called Hair Metal under the name Young Gunns by guitarist Benny Rhynedance and singer Drew Hannah in Hollywood . Both originally came from the Seattle music scene and moved to Los Angeles in 1986 , where they and their band Rogue got to know the rules of the infamous Pay To Play system. When they dared to start over in 1988, they engaged a second guitarist in Brent Woods from the pop band Alrisha. Bassist Kenny Hillary is quickly replaced by Marc Simon, bassist for LA Glam Veterans St. Valentine . Johnny Dean is on board as the drummer, but after a while he makes way for Jimmy Darby, the ex-drummer from NRG. With this stable line up, the band begins their attack on Hollywood. They quickly become favorites of the Sunset Strip , as well as the house band in the renowned Club Whiskey-A-Go-Go on Monday evenings. When they sold out the well-known clubs such as The Roxy , Gazzarri’s , Xposeur 54 and Spice and landed on the covers of the most important LA rock magazines, the first record companies finally noticed the band. Until 1990 the Young Gunns gained a reputation as an excellent live band. But in addition to the record companies, with increasing popularity, a film company also becomes aware of the band, which owns the rights to a film of the same name (with Emilio Estevez in the lead role) and threatens to take legal action if they continue to operate under that name. This is how Wildside , a title from a Mötley Crüe song, comes into play. In August 1990, WildSide finally signed with Capitol Records, who had previously competed with Polygram. Capitol wins the bid and signs the band for $ 1.8 million and five albums. This is the most expensive signing of a Hollywood rock band since WASP in 1983. With the legendary Led Zeppelin producer Andy Johns , WildSide begins secretly recording in Eddie Van Halen ’s own home studio as well as the renowned A&M studios in Hollywood. Steve Thompson and Michael Barbierio , who were also at the controls for the Guns N 'Roses million seller Appetite For Destruction , are mixing the band's debut album. Capitol Records had an elaborate marketing plan designed to push WildSide, but in 1992 everything turns out differently.

The first album and the tour

When Under The Influence was released in May 1992, the rock scene was in a state of upheaval. Raw, unpolished sounds are suddenly in demand. Bands like Nirvana or Pearl Jam replace the Hair Metal bands practically overnight. Suddenly it's uncool everywhere to hear bands like Warrant or Mötley Crüe . MTV no longer plays their videos and the radio stations the singles. Under The Influence will be released on May 22nd with little fuss. In the changed music landscape, Capitol Records is now relying on a different horse: Blind Melon should be their next big thing. In January 1992 the band went on tour with The Four Horsemen , after the album was released they teamed up with Babylon AD and Roxy Blue for a summer package. Sales increased during the tour and WildSide started their own headlining tour of America from January to March 1993. Around 50,000 albums sold and their own headlining tour - that is the greatest success the band can record in their career.

Changes

In the fall of 1993, Capitol changes management and WildSide is released from their five-album contract. Guitarist Brent Woods leaves the band in October to join Vince Neil ’s solo project to replace Steve Stevens . Brent plays on the 1995 album Cast In Stone , which also flops. As a replacement for Woods, WildSide are first trying to get former Love / Hate guitarist Jon E. Love into the band. That doesn't work any more than the attempt to win Dave Lizmi (The Four Horsemen) over. The band finally found a replacement in the former Graveyard Train guitarist Bruce Draper. The band continued touring in 1994 before singer Drew Hannah moved to Australia in March 1994. After his return, Benny Rhynedance announces his departure. With Draper as sole guitarist, WildSide recorded their self-titled second album in 1995. The band is now signed to TNT Records and the album has a heavy grunge hit. Album sales are very bad and most of the old fans are shocked by the style break. It doesn't take long before the band finally breaks up and the remaining members go back to their regular jobs. So z. B. Singer Drew Hannah started his own porn production company.

Reunion

In autumn 2004, a collection of unreleased songs, demos and live material called The Wasted Years will be released via RLS Records . At the same time, WildSide reform themselves and play some shows in the USA with the original line-up - but without Benny Rhynedance as the second guitarist. The CD also includes the song Crash Diet originally recorded for the debut album , a cover of an unreleased Guns N 'Roses song.
