The polder Scheffer field is a polder , the largest detention basin in the catchment area of Bauna in Schauenburg and serves the flood protection of the below this town of Baunatal in northern Hesse Kassel district .

Geographical location

The Schefferfeld polder is located between the Hohen Habichtswald in the north and the Langenberge in the southwest in the Habichtswald Nature Park immediately southeast of Elgershausen , the easternmost part of the municipality of Schauenburg , on the border with Altenritte , a district of Baunatal , to the east . It is located on the western Fulda tributary Bauna ; To the east past the polder the Fischbach flows as a small tributary of the Bauna. The Baunsberg , part of the Habichtswald, rises 1.2 km east of the basin .

Basin description

The construction of the dam for the Schefferfeld polder was aimed at by the municipality of Schauenburg and the city of Baunatal in cooperation with the University of Kassel as part of the EXPO 2000 project "Environmentally compatible flood protection " since 1993 after a severe flood event in 1992 . It was built in 2000 and inaugurated in May 2000.

The polder is designed for a 100-year flood (HQ 100 ), which statistically occurs once every 100 years. If a more seldom, stronger flood occurs, the agricultural areas close to the aforementioned constriction are also dammed. The basin is only dammed in the event of a flood and relates to a catchment area of 12.8 km². In 2002 the polder was dammed with 150,000 m³ of water for the first time.

The around 930 m long earth embankment dam between 238 and 245  m above sea level. The basin located at the NHN joins the road embankment of the L 3215 (formerly B 520 ) and then bends at an angle of about 105  degrees in the direction of Elgershausen or west-northwest along the Bauna. The volume of the dam, whose crest height is a maximum of 6.50 m above street level, comprises around 120,000 m³; only 115,000 m³ are mentioned.

When the Bauna performs more than 15 m³ / s of water, the polder begins to automatically fill because a damming is created by an artificial constriction in the Bauna so that the water via a feed line structure with hydraulic - weir flap flows. It flows to the deepest part of the basin, where there is a wet biotope with permanent backlog. Depending on the strength of the flood, it can fill up completely. Subsequently, a drainage structure with a hydraulic protection board guides the water into the Bauna in a level-controlled manner.

When completely filled, a meadow and arable area of around 7 hectares with - according to various statements - 230,000 to 234,000 m³ of flood storage space is dammed; emptying takes a maximum of 72 hours.

The Bauna

The Bauna , which is 17.2 km long, flows directly below and at the same time along the dam and parallel to state road 3218 in a north-west-south-east direction past the flood retention basin, so that the bank of the flowing water , which is mostly made up of alders and willows , is unaffected by the water level of the basin remains.

During the construction of the dam, some near-natural redesigns were carried out in the Bauna to improve the passage of benthos and fish and various obstacles in the stream bed were removed.

Traffic and walking

The state road  3215 (former federal road 520 ) runs immediately southeast past the Schefferfeld polder , the L 3218 (Altenritter Strasse) runs around 250 m to the southwest and Kreisstrasse  22 (Korbacher Strasse) around 250 m north . The Märchenlandweg leads directly southwest past the polder between Altenritte and Breitenbach along the Bauna . Walking paths, which run across the dam, are laid out around the polder.
