Pisanosaurus ("Pisanos lizard") is a genus of bird basin dinosaurs (Ornithischia) from the Upper Triassic of Argentina. The genus is one of the oldest representatives of the dinosaurs and is considered to be the oldest and systematically most basal bird basin dinosaur.

features

In pisanosaurus is a bipedal locomotive ( bipedal ) ornithischia. The herbivorous dinosaur was about 90 centimeters to 1 meter long, about 30 centimeters high and weighed an estimated 4 kilograms. Since the only known fossil is incomplete, these are estimates and the information in the literature varies accordingly.

Fossil lore and systematic affiliation

Rodolfo Casamiquela described the genus together with the type species in 1967. He chose the genus name in honor of the paleontologist Juan A. Pisano . So far, only one individual with parts of the skull, jaw, spine, leg and foot has been found in the Ischigualasto formation .
