François Georges René Bruhat (born April 8, 1929 in Paris , † July 17, 2007 ) was a French mathematician who dealt in particular with Lie groups and algebraic groups .

Life

Bruhat attended the Lycée Henri IV and the Lycée Saint-Louis in Paris and then studied from 1948 at the École normal supérieure , where his father Georges Bruhat also worked as a director adjoint. From 1952 to 1955 he worked for the CNRS . His doctoral thesis dealt with induced representations of Lie groups, to which he devoted a series of works in the 1950s and in which he applied the theory of distributions developed by Laurent Schwartz . In addition, with Henri Cartan he investigated real analytic manifolds with singularities. In 1955 he was Maître de conférences in Nancywhere he later became a professor of mathematics. In 1961 he became a professor in Paris (at the Faculté des Sciences) and in 1970 at the University of Paris VII, where he stayed until 1989. He was one of the founding members of the university, for whose interdisciplinary orientation he advocated, and from 1976 to 1981 Vice President of the university.

With Jacques Tits he developed the theory of simple algebraic groups over local fields from 1965 onwards . In 1972 her work (book-length) Groupes réductifs sur un corps local (Publications Mathematiques de IHES 1972) was published. With Tits he created the theory of buildings ( Bruhat Tits Buildings ). In 1956 he introduced Bruhat decomposition .

Bruhat was a member of Bourbaki .

Since 1990 he has been a corresponding member of the French Academy of Sciences , officer of the Legion of Honor and commander of the Ordre des Palmes Académiques . In 1970 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Nice ( Groupes algébriques semi-simples sur un corps local ).

He is the brother of Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat .
