Elmshagen is the smallest district of the community of Schauenburg in the northern Hessian district of Kassel .

Geographical location

Elmshagen is located in the Habichtswald Nature Park about 14 km southwest of Kassel . It is located a few kilometers southwest of Hoof , the main town of Schauenburg, south of Breitenbach and north of Niedenstein ( Schwalm-Eder district ). Like Elmshagen, the latter is located on the Wiehoff tributary of the Ems , which rises near the village and forms the junction of the Langenberge in the east with the Hinterhabichtswälder peaks in the west.

history

The village was first mentioned in 1334 as villa Elwineshagin in a document from the Merxhausen monastery . Other forms of the name were Elbinshain (1348), Elmershain (1447) and Melmeshagen (1459).

In the years before 1344 the village and court of Elmshagen were the Mainz fiefdom of the Wackermaul . When these men died out with Konrad Wackermaul in 1344, the von Dalwigk were enfeoffed with it. In 1850 the Wiegrebe acquired the manor.

Since August 1st 1972 Elmshagen has been part of the (large) community of Schauenburg. From December 31, 1971 to July 31, 1972, Elmshagen with Breitenbach and Martinhagen still belonged to the municipality of Hoof, which then became part of the municipality of Schauenburg.

pillory

A landmark of Elmshagen is the Schandpfahl , which today stands on the main street and is probably a replica. The pillory was mentioned again and again, but there is no information about age and origin. According to a book from 1905, it dates from the Middle Ages and stood in the center of the village under an old ash tree . The last man chained to a stake and publicly exposed to shame is said to have been a goose thief around 1814.

church

The Protestant church in Elmshagen is of Romanesque origin from the 13th century and belonged to the Protestant parish of Hoof-Elmshagen. In the late Gothic period it was increased and a new choir room was added to the east . A half-timbered storey was added later.
