particularities Festberg nature conservation and FFH area near Phillipinenthal

The Festberg is an elongated and up to 330  m high mountain ridge about 4 km (as the crow flies ) northeast of the city center of Wolfhagen in the northern Hessian district of Kassel . It is located immediately northeast of Philippinenthal , but in the area of Altenhasungen further northeast , both districts of Wolfhagen.

Natural space

In terms of natural space, the mountain in the Habichtswald Nature Park belongs to the Wolfhager Hügelland (subunit 341.3) in the Ostwaldecker Randsenken (main unit 341) in the West Hessian highlands (main unit group 34). The Erpe tributary Lohbach runs in Altenhasunger Graben along the south-western flank of the mountain.

The mountain

The Festberg consists of Lower Muschelkalk , the layers of which were inclined by about 30 - 45 ° due to the sinking of the Altenhasunger Graben and today form a ridge that slopes steeply to the southwest towards the Lohbach and Philippinenthal. These slopes with their shallow soils were used by Altenhasungen as a hut area until the middle of the 20th century . The goats and sheep grazed not only the grass but also emerging trees, and over time a typical limestone semi-arid lawn was created. With the end of grazing, the area began to be covered with bushes , which has only been counteracted by summer grazing with heather sheep and goats and other care measures since the mid-1990s .

natural reserve

The south-western slope of the mountain was Regulation of 21 October 1992 from the Upper nature conservation authority of the Regional Council of Kassel as a nature reserve designated (NSG no. 1633032) and in 2004 in the same limits as the Fauna Flora Habitat (FFH) area (FHH Area number 4621-305). The Festberg protected area near Phillipinenthal is around 1 km long and up to 200 m wide, a total of 14.32 hectares and extends from 270 m above sea level in the brook bottom to 325 m above sea level on the mountain ridge. The protected area contains different habitat types: orchid-rich limestone grasslands , juniper heaths , bushes, small-scale pine stands with proportions of hardwoods and the natural course of the Lohbach with its narrow alluvial forest in the extreme southwest.
