Elfbuchenturm

The Elfbuchen is about 535  m above sea level. NHN high northern foothills of the Bachberg (also called Bach ; approx.  560  m ), which is located in the area of the city of Kassel in northern Hesse ( Germany ) and belongs to the eastern ridge of the Hohen Habichtswald .

The wooded mountain spur is widely known due to the Elfbuchenturm there (currently closed) and the Waldhotel Elfbuchen . Nearby is the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe with the Kassel Hercules , Wilhelmshöhe Castle and the Kassel water features .

geography

location

The Elfbuchen is located as the northern branch of the wooded, eastern mountain ridge of the Hohen Habichtswald and the Bachberg there, just north of the Wilhelmshöhe Mountain Park, directly on the border between the Kassel districts of Bad Wilhelmshöhe and Harleshausen . It belongs to the Habichtswald Nature Park .

In addition to the Hüttenberg ( 555  m ) to the south , on which the remains of walls and foundations of the Little Hercules (also called the Old Winter Box) are just below the summit , and the Bachberg (approx.  565  m ), which is wooded between the Elfbuchen and the Hüttenberg rises, the Elfbuchen represents one of the highest points of this mountain ridge.

Parts of the fauna-flora-habitat area Habichtswald and Seilerberg near Ehlen (FFH no. 4622-302; 29.1936  km² ) are located on the Elfbuchen .

Natural allocation

The elf beech belongs to the natural spatial main unit group West Hessian mountain and sink country (No. 34) and in the main unit Habichtswälder Bergland (342) to the natural area High Habichtswald (342.00). To the east, the landscape drops into the natural area Kasseler Graben (343.31), which in this direction advances like a spur into the subunit Kasseler Becken (343.3) located north and south of this natural area ; both belong to the main unit of the West Hessian Basin (343).

Spur height

The Elfbuchen is about 535  m high; the spur height is sometimes given as 536  m ; it has no peak. A forest path and road intersection ( ), which is around 100 m southwest of the Elfbuchenturm and Waldhotel Elfbuchen, is located at a height of 535.0 m; a measuring point at 535.5  m is shown on topographic maps directly next to this intersection .

Elfbuchenturm

On the Elfbuchen stands - on the border of the Kassel districts Bad Wilhelmshöhe and Harleshausen - the Elfbuchenturm ( ), an observation tower that was closed due to dilapidation and was built at a height of 535  m . The tower, built in 1879 by the Improvement Association in Cassel with masonry stones made of Habichtswalder basalt tuff , was inaugurated on September 18, 1879. At that time there were still so few trees on the eastern ridge of the Hohe Habichtswald that one could see from Elfbuchen to Hercules without climbing the tower, which can also be seen from old photos; this lasted at least until the beginning of the 20th century. The tower height is often given as 15 m; If you take the difference between the height of the tower ( 535  m ) and the viewing platform ( 551.3  m ) as a basis, the result is a tower height of 16.3 m. Because the platform of the currently closed tower has been towered over by treetops for decades, the only theoretically possible view is through the branches of the trees. There is an FM radio antenna on the tower .

Waldhotel Elfbuchen

The forest hotel

The Waldhotel Elfbuchen is located directly south of the Elfbuchenturm and thus still within the area belonging to Bad Wilhelmshöhe, which includes a café - restaurant and a guesthouse and a beer garden . From the beginning , small refreshments were offered in a wooden shelter, which was surrounded by 11 young beeches (only one is still standing). When a flag fluttered on the tower, the people of Kassel knew: "Today is open" . The hut was later replaced by a weatherproof bar, in which coffee brought by the guests was brewed. Over the years a restaurant was built and later the modern Waldhotel Elfbuchen.

Sledding

A path, often used by tobogganers , leads steeply downhill from the Elfbuchenturm to the forest path crossing ( 474  m ) in the transition area from Elfbuchen to Wurmberg (approx.  485  m ). If the snow conditions are ideal, they can continue on one of the downhill paths from there, with a short break on Rasenallee , to Hessenschanze on the outskirts of the Kassel district of Kirchditmold . This is reached with the end of the toboggan run at about 240  m after a total of 2.7 km mainly east-south-east.

Traffic and walking

Like the upper part of Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, the Elfbuchen can best be accessed from the parking lots at the Herkules . Various forest paths lead to the spur over the northern part of the eastern ridge of the Hohe Habichtswald. You can therefore take a circular walk of around 3 km in length: On the way to Elfbuchen you walk on the eastern path (on the side facing Kassel) and on the way back to Hercules on the western path (on the side facing the Habichtswald highlands) with a view over meadows and pastures towards the Essigberg ( 597.5  m ). Two days a week, you can take a horse-drawn carriage from the Hercules, Kassel's landmark, to Elfbuchen and back.
