And It Was Summer is Peter Maffay's sixth studio album , released in 1976.

History of origin

Early to mid-1976 Peter Maffay recorded his sixth studio album with studio musicians, And It Was Summer . As with Meine Freiheit , Maffay produced it together with Joachim Heider . A total of twenty songs were recorded, from which Peter Maffay selected twelve titles. Maffay was the main composer, but the texts were mostly written by Gregor Rottschalk (under the pseudonym Christian Heilburg) in consultation with Maffay.

The title song, which was released as a single before the album , caused a minor scandal when it was released. The lines of text "I was 16 and she was 31 / And I didn't know much about love / She knew everything and she let me feel / I was no longer a child" caused problems for many program directors and artistic directors. Many radio stations also refused, and it was summer to play.

Maffay appeared with "And it was summer" on October 23, 1976 in the 86th edition of the ZDF hit parade .

The text for the song Und es war Sommer is a adaptation of Summer (The First Time) (1973), a song by the American singer-songwriter and country singer Bobby Goldsboro . However, his authorship was always kept secret in connection with the Maffay recording.

The album was released on August 28, 1976.

Track list

The songs were composed in particular by Joachim Heider (1, 2, 4 to 12), Peter Maffay (2 to 12) and Peter Schirmann. The texts mostly come from a joint effort by Gregor Rottschalk (1 to 4, 6 to 9 and 11) and Maffay (2 to 8, 10 and 12). Deviating composers and additions are listed in the title list.

The album was awarded a gold record in Germany in 1991 .
