So are you is a song by Peter Maffay that was released as a single from the 1979 album Steppenwolf . It is his second and last number one hit after Du from 1970. It was also the best-selling single of 1979 in Germany .
Origin and content
The song was written by Maffay, the lyrics are by Bernd Opinion . It was produced by Maffay together with Peter Wagner . The Pop - / pop - ballad is instrumented with acoustic guitar, bass, drums and strings. A saxophone solo sounds towards the end of the piece. Various background singers, including women, can be heard. The text is a song of praise to the loved one, with whom the protagonist also feels inseparable:
“And when I go, only part of me goes.
And if you go, your warmth stays here.
And when I cry, only part of me cries
and the other laughs with you. "
Publication and reception
The single was released by Telefunken in March 1979 . On the B-side was On The Way To Me . So are you also appeared on numerous compilation albums . Only about four months after the publication climbed to number one in the German single charts and was there for three weeks from July 30th to August 19th, totaling 43 chart weeks. In Austria it reached number 17 and in Switzerland number three. The single achieved gold status in Germany and, with over 250,000 units sold, is one of the country's best-selling hits .
The success of the title was not least due to the ZDF hit parade , in which Maffay was listed eight times in 1979 and appeared on the show four times, which meant that he was there for almost nine months. He first performed it on May 7, 1979 , the title was listed at number 15. In the following episode he reached number two on June 11, 1979 and then number one for four issues in a row, with Maffay appearing on July 9 and September 10, in the other two programs as well as the following two issues until December 10, 1979 was not on the show because of other obligations.
Berndorff / Friedrich described the song as "a tone cast commitment to parting and starting over".
