Alfred Kraus

Alfred Kraus (born May 30, 1899 in Konstanz , † June 7, 1979 in Mühldorf am Inn ) was a German chemist and author in the field of nitrocellulose lacquers .

Life

Alfred Kraus was drafted into the First World War in 1916 after completing his secondary school diploma and returned from French captivity in 1918. Kraus studied chemistry at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg and was awarded a PhD on February 17, 1926 with a dissertation on the subject of knowledge of usnic acid (University archive no. C-117). phil. nat. PhD .

After completing his studies, Kraus initially worked in the production of leather colors. In 1930 he began his fundamental research and extensive development of nitrocellulose lacquers. During the Second World War , he worked from April 1, 1941 at WASAG AG in Magdeburg . In September 1946, the British occupying forces arranged for him to stay in England for several years . Here the chemist worked for the Scott Bader company in Wellingborough .

In 1950 Alfred Kraus and his wife Anni Kraus, b. Engel, (born June 18, 1919 - September 5, 2009) and his daughter Margaret Kraus (born March 4, 1948 in England) return to Germany. He took on his first job in his specialist area at Hagedorn & Co. AG in Osnabrück . In 1953, Alfred Kraus moved to WASAG-Chemie AG, initially at the Sythen plant , and from 1957 he headed the paint technology laboratory at Nitrochemie GmbH in Aschau . Since 1957 Alfred Kraus lived with his family in Mühldorf am Inn . His professional activities ended in 1968 as a result of an occupational disease.

Kraus has published the results of his work in the field of nitrocellulose lacquers in more than forty individual publications. The academic papers have been in the library of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main since October 2004 .

Alfred Krau's daughter Margaret Minker worked as a medical journalist , translator and author.

Already during his studies on March 13, 1922, Alfred Kraus was accepted as an extraordinary member of the German Chemical Society, which was re-established as the Society of German Chemists after the Second World War .
