Christine Jensen

Christine Jensen (* 1970 in Sechelt , British Columbia ) is a Canadian jazz musician ( alto and soprano saxophone , composition , arrangement and conducting ).

Christine Jensen is the younger sister of trumpeter Ingrid Jensen . She grew up in Nanaimo and first learned the piano before switching to the saxophone at the age of twelve. In 1990 she moved to Montreal , where she studied at McGill University and took classes with Pat LaBarbera , Kenny Werner , Jim McNeely and Rémi Bolduc . She played in the ensemble of McGill University (album Poppin 'The Cork , 1993), earned her bachelor's degree in 1994 and her master's degree in jazz performance in 2006.

Jensen began to compose during her studies; the title track of Ingrid Jensen's debut album Vernal Fields ( Enja , 1995) earned her her first Juno Award . In 2000 her debut album Collage was released ; In 2002 she received a scholarship from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec to study at the Paris Cité Internationale des Arts . With an 18-piece orchestra she recorded the album Treelines , which won the Juno Award for Jazz Album of the Year . Her arrangements are influenced by Maria Schneider and Gil Evans . In the field of jazz, she was involved in 22 recording sessions between 1992 and 2017; she also worked with Dick Oatts and Steve Wilson . Jensen, who lives in Montreal and teaches at McGill University, is married to saxophonist Joel Miller, with whom she also appears in a quartet. She also directed the Orchester National de Jazz Montreal . Since 2013 she has directed the Orchester National de Jazz Montreal for various programs .
