Vico Magistretti, son of the Milanese architect Pier Giulio Magistretti (1891–1945), attended the Parini high school in Milan and began studying architecture at the Milan Polytechnic in autumn 1939. In 1943 he emigrated to Switzerland and attended lectures in Lausanne at the Champ Universitaire Italy. Here he met Ernesto Nathan Rogers from the BBPR office in Milan , who had to emigrate to Switzerland as the son of a Jewish-Italian mother. The eleven years older Rogers became an important reference person for Magistretti's further professional career. In 1945 Vico Magistretti returned to Milan, where he graduated from the Polytechnic in August of that year. From 1945, immediately after studying architecture, he worked together with Paolo Chessa initially as an architect in the architecture office of his father Pier Giulio, who died that same year. In 1959 Magistretti belonged to the Italian delegation of CIAM XI in Otterlo, along with BBPR , Ignazio Gardella and Giancarlo De Carlo . His project 'Casa Arosio in Arenzano ', built between 1956 and 1959, was presented at the congress .

In the 1960s, Vico Magistretti's work as an industrial designer began. Over the course of this decade, his designs were produced by renowned companies such as Asko , Artemide , Cassina and Rosenthal . He became known for his "Maralunga" sofa and the "Carimate" chair, which is a symbol of "Swinging London". In 1979 he received the Compasso d'Oro design award for his "Atollo" table lamp . A dozen of his designs belong to the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City .
