All the beautiful horses (Original title: All the Pretty Horses ) is an American drama film directed by Billy Bob Thornton from 2000 . Ted Tally wrote the screenplay based on a novel by Cormac McCarthy .
action
The action takes place in 1949 and tells the story of 19 year old John Grady Cole and his friend Lacey Rawlins. After Cole's grandfather dies, the family ranch is to be sold. Since Cole wants nothing more than to work on a horse ranch, and there are hardly any left in Texas , he and Rawlins ride to Mexico with the aim of hiring a ranch there. On the way there they meet the young runaway Jimmy Blevins, and together they cross the border into Mexico. Blevins' horse runs away in a thunderstorm. They rediscover the horse in a village, steal it back and split up to escape the pursuers.
Shortly afterwards, Cole and Rawlins find work on Hector de la Rocha's farm. There Cole falls in love with Hector's daughter Alejandra. After a while, the two meet secretly more often. But this relationship dishonors Alejandra as a woman and her family. That's why the patron Hector de la Rocha arrests Cole and Rawlins, who have long been wanted by the Mexican police for their connection to Blevins. Blevins came back to the village where they'd stolen his horse back to get his revolver back. He allegedly shot three men.
After a few days of detention and interrogation in the village, the three are taken to the penitentiary. Blevins is shot by a police officer on the way there in revenge for one of the three men Blevins killed. Shortly afterwards Rawlins is seriously injured in a knife fight in prison. Cole doesn't know if Rawlins survived the wounds and soon finds himself in a similar situation. In the dining room someone attacks him with a knife in front of everyone, but Cole now has one too and can assert himself. He brutally stabs the attacker and leaves the room. The two friends meet again in the infirmary and learn that they have been ransomed by Alejandra's aunt. You will be released from custody.
Fed up with Mexico, Rawlins takes the bus back to Texas. However, Cole desperately wants to see Alejandra again and secretly meets with her again, wants to marry her and take her to Texas. But Alejandra stays. Cole then gets his three horses back and takes the captain who shot Blevins hostage with him. A couple of Indians help him on the way and take the captain with them, with whom they still have a bill.
Back in Texas, Cole meets an assistant sheriff and has to answer to a judge about the horses and weapons. But he is very impressed by Cole and his story and lets him go.

He is satisfied “ with the reproduction of the simple story ” and does not grasp the “ meta level ” of the novel. Conceived as a " cinema of great emotions and overwhelming " it offers " at best externalized entertainment, which even the actors cannot breathe life into ".
Cinema magazine wrote that the film was a " lame horse opera " and a " painful turning point in the career of the hitherto highly regarded Billy Bob Thornton ". The “ rough poetry ” and the storyline of the novel would “ fall by the wayside ”.
