Ted Tally

Ted Tally (born April 9, 1952 in North Carolina ; born Theodore Tally ) is an American screenwriter .

Life and accomplishments

Tally studied at Yale College , which is part of Yale University , and the Yale School of Drama . He made his debut writing the 1987 television drama A Home for Joey , which starred Louis Gossett Jr. and Malcolm-Jamal Warner .

Tally won an Oscar in 1992 for the screenplay of the thriller The Silence of the Lambs (1991) by Jonathan Demme and with Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins based on the novel by Thomas Harris . He also won the Writers Guild of America Award , the Saturn Award, and the Edgar Allan Poe Award, and was nominated for the Golden Globe Award and the BAFTA Award . Tally won the National Board of Review Award in 2000 for the script based on a novel for the film drama All the Beautiful Horses (2000) by Billy Bob Thornton and starring Matt Damon and Penélope Cruz . He was nominated for the Las Vegas Film Critics Society Award in 2000 and for the USC Scripter Award in 2001.

Tally advised the screenwriters of the animated films Shrek 2 - The Daredevil Hero Returns (2004) and Madagascar (2005). He was also one of the producers of the science fiction film Mission to Mars (2000).

Tally is married and has two children. He lives in Pennsylvania .
