Operation: 12 Strong (original title 12 Strong ) is a historical war drama by Nicolai Fuglsig , which was released in US cinemas on January 19, 2018 and in German cinemas on March 8, 2018. The film is based on the novel biography Horse Soldiers: The Extraordinary Story of a Band of US Soldiers Who Rode to Victory in Afghanistan by Doug Stanton and tells of a special unit of the US military that tried to enter after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 Afghanistan to capture the city of Mazar-e Sharif .

action

Immediately after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , some soldiers were sent to Afghanistan . Saying goodbye to their families is difficult. Chosen from four teams, the special unit of Mitch Nelson, a US Army captain who was previously inexperienced but respected by his men, found himself a short time later south of Mazar-e Sharif .

Their mission is to take the city together with an Afghan armed force led by the warlord General Dostum and belonging to the Northern Alliance, thereby defeating the Taliban and Al-Qaeda . They have the task of assigning targets to the US Air Force as forward air controllers . The Americans have to adapt to the tactics of their allies - on horseback against tanks and vehicles in foreign territory, in which there are more than 50,000 Taliban supporters. Nevertheless they manage to inflict heavy losses on the opposing troops and to take over the most important valley at Mazar-e Sharif. Only one of the twelve men is wounded, but General Dostum loses the "race" for the city against a rival leader.

Novel biography, film title and staff

The film is based on the novel biography Horse Soldiers: The Extraordinary Story of a Band of US Soldiers Who Rode to Victory in Afghanistan by Doug Stanton from 2009. This landed on various bestseller lists and is meanwhile also required reading for US military training . Stanton, who originally worked as a journalist, describes the events in Afghanistan largely soberly and also includes the perspectives of various soldiers, especially those of their leader Mark Nutsch (renamed Mitch Nelson for the film).

The film title Operation: 12 Strong is derived from the number of soldiers for whom the memorial of a mounted soldier was built after this at the foot of Ground Zero , where the World Trade Center was until 2001 . The original title of the film was like that of the biography Horse Soldiers . The director was Nicolai Fuglsig .

Stanton's factual novel was adapted for the film by Ted Tally and Peter Craig . Their script does not focus exclusively on the armed conflict until the end. In concise individual scenes, the film is always dedicated to those details that are at least as important for the decisive outcome of the operation, in which a single American had to face an average of 5,000 opponents, as the question of who is shooting at the crucial moment or who is is not hit, so Antje Wessels atquotemeter.de .

Cast, filming and score

Chris Hemsworth , shown here shortly after filming at San Diego Comic-Con International, plays Captain Mitch Nelson in the film.

Chris Hemsworth plays Captain Mitch Nelson , who was in command of the Afghan War. In real life, his counterpart Mark Nutsch was the leader of the special unit. At the time of the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001, he was actually employed in a higher position behind the desk and had not had any combat experience at all. General Abdul Raschid Dostum , played in the film by Navid Negahban , was a former Afghan militia leader and at the time he was the vice-president of Afghanistan.

The shooting took place in Santa Clarita, California and in Albuquerque , Socorro , Alamogordo and in mines near Orogrande in New Mexico .

The score was composed by Lorne Balfe . The soundtrack for the film consists of 19 pieces of music and was released as download by WaterTower Music on January 12, 2018.

Age rating

In the USA, the film received an R rating from the MPAA , which corresponds to a rating of 17 and over. In Germany the film is FSK 16 . The statement of reasons for the release states: “The film contains numerous fighting and action scenes, which neither play down nor glorify the war or the violence shown. The American war effort is legitimized, but not glorified. Young people from the age of 16 are able to classify the events appropriately and to process the sometimes more violent depictions of violence in the context of the war. "

Reviews

Antje Wessels explains in her criticism atquotemeter.de that the scriptwriters always made sure not only to illuminate the concerns of the US-Americans, but also to deal at least as much with the Afghan soldiers. That makes Operation: 12 Strong all in all a very down-to-earth film about the struggle between good and evil, which no longer wallows in the heroism of its twelve protagonists than they deserve, Wessels continues. With the film, the makers took a comprehensive look at this extraordinary mission and only set exciting action peaks in between, some of which were only captured from very far away, which captures the extent of the destruction almost even better: “A truly visually stunning affair! The further Operation: 12 Strong progresses, the more brief moments of patriotic rebellion accumulate. This is understandable given the real circumstances of this mission; After all, you have to have a tremendous love for your own country in order to voluntarily go to war zones like the '12 Strong '. "

In a review by Spiegel Online it is noted that the film concentrates too much on one character: "It is a one-man show by Chris Hemsworth , the other characters hardly go into depth." Criticism that the biggest positive aspect is that in Operation: 12 Strong , unlike in other war films, there is no classic black and white thinking, and it is made clear that the US soldiers need the Afghans to fight this war win. The enemy is not Afghanistan, but the terrorist groups, and both countries have a common goal in stopping terrorism in order to be able to live in peace again.

Johannes Hahn from Robots & Dragons notes that it is difficult to judge a war film like Operation: 12 Strong without the still current political background, which is why every viewer must know for themselves how much fun they are in the times of America First and gaining strength Nationalisms in Europe in a war film. Unfortunately, the film leaves out the fact that people become terrorists or fundamentalist soldiers for various reasons and misses a chance here to give the enemy a human face and thus at least a touch of depth to the whole blast, Hahn continues. In return, the film offers military and action enthusiasts everything they can imagine, such as shootings, explosions, military language and cool soldiers.

Gross profit

The film's worldwide revenue from theatrical screenings to date is $ 67.5 million.
