Jakob Scherz

Jakob Scherz (born September 15 or 18 , 1818 in Aeschi near Spiez , † August 12 or 13 , 1889 in Bern ) was a Swiss politician .

Life

Born as the son of a teacher, Scherz studied law in Jena and Bern after attending high school in Bern. During his studies in 1840 he became a member of the Burgkeller fraternity in Jena. In 1840 he also became a member of the Helvetia Bern student union , of which he was president in the winter semester of 1842/43. He was a close friend of Jakob Stämpfli . After his exams he worked as an advocate in Bern from 1846 . From 1846 to 1850 and from 1870 to 1883 he was a councilor in Bern , from 1849 to 1857 substitute for the higher court and in 1858 chief judge. He was also an employee of the Berner Zeitung .

In 1850 he became a major in the vigilante group . In the second free group he worked as an officer . in the Sonderbund War of 1856/57 he was deployed as a major and battalion commander in Neuchâtel. In 1860 he became a federal colonel . He was also a member of the Federal General Staff and commander of the 7th Brigade .

From 1858 to 1869 he was Councilor in the Department of Finance and 1864-1865 and 1867-1868 whose president (finance minister). From 1860 to 1889 he was a member of the National Council , where he worked primarily in the military and rifle clubs. From 1869 to 1889 he was the administrator of the Inselspital in Bern. In 1885 he became president of the Swiss Federal Shooting Festival in Bern and was president of the city shooting society in Bern. In 1862 he was President of the Swiss Officers' Association, from 1858 to 1863 a member of the Board of Directors and President of the Bern Cantonal Bank . From 1883 to 1885 he was also a constitutional councilor.
