Evil Dead is an American thrash metal band from Los Angeles ( California ), which was founded in the 1987th The band is named after the horror film Tanz der Teufel (English original title: The Evil Dead ) by Sam Raimi .

history

The band was founded in 1987 by guitarist Juan Garcia ( Abattoir , Agent Steel ) and bassist Mel Sanchez (Abattoir). Together with drummer Rob Alaniz (ex- Necrophilia ) and guitarist Mark Caro (Abattoir) they recorded the first demo The Awakening in the same year . Bassist Garcia also took over the role of singer at the demo. On April 11, 1987, they played their first concert at Fender's Ballroom in Long Beach . There they performed with bands like Cryptic Slaughter , Dark Angel and Possessed .

In 1988, Garcia finally separated from his band, Agent Steel, so he could devote himself entirely to Evildead. In the same year the band also reached a contract with Steamhammer Records . Albert Gonzales also replaced Mark Caro as guitarist, and Phil Flores took over the position of singer. Together they took the EP Rise Above , which contained their own songs, and the black flag cover Rise Above as the theme song . In the US, the EP was released on Roadrunner Records . The EP attracted increasing attention to the band. In the summer of 1988 she entered the Music Grinder Studios with producer Casey Mackin ( Nuclear Assault , Kreator ) and recorded the first studio album Annihilation of Civilization , which was also released in 1989 on Steamhammer Records.

After some changes in the cast, they began a tour with the band Lääz Rockit through Europe . They also made a tour of the USA with the band Death . This was followed by another change in the line-up. Albert Gonzalez continued to accompany Death on their tour, Rob Alaniz and Mel Sanchez also left the band. With Karlos Medina (bass), drummer Doug Clawson (ex-Defcon) and Phil's brother Dan on the second guitar, they began recording The Underworld , which was produced by Warren Cryole . It was released in 1991 through Steamhammer Records. The album included a cover version of the Scorpions title He's a Woman, She's a Man . The late David Wayne (ex- Metal Church ) appeared as a guest singer and Gene Hoglan ( Strapping Young Lad / ex- Dark Angel ) took over the post of drummer.

Since Doug Clawson left the band soon, he was replaced for the subsequent tour by Joe Montelongo. With this they recorded the live album From the Depths of the Underworld , but before the album was released, singer Phil Flores separated from the band. In 1992 the band split up. Juan Garcia and bassist Karlos Medina played a few gigs again with the band Agent Steel, while Mel Sanchez played a few more concerts with Abattoir.

In October 2009, the original members Rob Alaniz, Juan Garcia, Mel Sanchez and Albert Gonzales reunited and rehearsed together for the first time. In the beginning Chris Malaki (Abattoir) was the singer of the band. In 2010 Steve Nelson ( Winterthrall , Noctuary ) took his post. After internal disputes, the band's future is currently on hold.

style

The fast riffs and the fast vocals are characteristic of the band. Lyrically, the songs deal with the rejection of religion and the nuclear apocalypse. Musically, the band can be compared to the band Overkill , with Evildead's songs being more melodic.
