The Brauhaus Sion is a historic former brewery and today's inn in Cologne's old town . The brewery continues the tradition of the pub, first mentioned in 1318 under the address “Unter Taschenmacher zu Köln”, at the same location.

history

In 1318 the building was on the site of today's Sion Brewery, Unter Taschenmacher No. 5, owned by the brewer Johannes Braxator; a corresponding entry in the shrine book of St. Laurence from this period reads: "Domus Kusini, que modo Medebruyrs dic"; (translated: "The house of the Cusins, which is called Medebruyrs"). The so-called Medebier , which was mixed with herbs and honey, was brewed here . Since the brewing rights in Cologne were always tied to the house at that time, it can be safely assumed that beer was brewed in the building at that time in the early 14th century. The trademark "Sion" today refers to this "house tradition since 1318" .

The brewing register of the city of Cologne shows the house “Unter Taschenmacher No. 5” for 1835 as the in-house brewery of the brewer Christian Peter Herbertz, who brewed beer at this location until 1852.

Adam Jüsgen followed him until 1879 and his son Joseph continued the brewing tradition until 1885. The brewer Louis Kivernagel then ran the house brewery and pub until 1895.

Council Chamber

After Anton Vetten had managed the brewery until 1901, the Jüsgen family, together with Jean Jüsgen, returned to the previous family business until 1904. At that time, Jüsgen renamed his house brewery “Dombrauerei” and the brewery “Dombräues”. Josef Schwartz, the owner of the brewery zur Malzmühle , then took over the house until 1912.

Jean Sion, who came from a brewing family in the Eifel , took over the house brewery until his death in 1915; his community of heirs followed as owner until 1928.

Georg Risch, the husband of the widow of the brewer Jean Sion, continued the business until 1936. That year Hans Sion took over the brewery and the brewery in the building. At the end of the 1930s, the brewery was no longer allowed to be called "Dombräues" because the Hirsch brewery from Bayenthal (then with the brand: "Dom-Pils") had successfully sued the name. The house brewery was largely destroyed by a bomb hit on May 31, 1942 and was no longer usable during the Second World War . The building was completely destroyed at the end of the war. Hans Sion had the house rebuilt afterwards and operated under the current name "Brauhaus Sion". The brewing operations of this former house brewery were not resumed in the building; the traditional brand's beer was produced as a wage brew in other Cologne breweries, since 1993 alongside other brands in the Bergische Löwenbrauerei in Cologne-Mülheim of the Cologne association . Since the death of Hans Sion in 1998, his son Hans Georg Sion has run the brewery and the original parent company of the Sion-Kölsch brewery. Today, the Sion brewery comprises the building complex “Unter Taschenmacher No. 3–11” and offers seating for around 600 guests.

The Sion Brewery at Cologne's Alter Markt is also one of the historical “stops” on the Cologne Brewery Trail , which was initiated in 1997 by the brewer Hans Sion - together with the writer Franz Mathar and the Hans Sion Foundation.
