Hans Sion

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann "Hans" Sion (born March 24, 1911 in Cologne ; † January 3, 1998 ibid) was a Cologne beer brewer who further developed the Kölsch brand Sion-Kölsch and made it known.

Life

Sion's father Jean Sion bought the restaurant in Cologne, Unter Taschenmacher 5 , in 1912 , but died in 1915. Under Taschenmacher 5 was built by Richardus Comes in 1287, when the street was still called “An Rindshuderen” and referred to the processing of cattle hides. It was then renamed elegantly in "Inter Corduanarios", so "with the Corduan leather processors " - under bag makers .

A community of heirs ran the brewery until 1928, when it was taken over by the brewery owner Georg Risch. He had married Jean Sion's widow. In 1936 he finally handed the business over to his stepson Hans Sion, who continued the family brewery. On May 30, 1942, it was completely destroyed in a bomb attack. In addition to his law degree, Hans Sion also acquired the title of master brewer . In 1945 he started a Kölsch campaign to convince his brewery colleagues of the importance of top-fermented beer for the city. On April 13, 1951 the inauguration of the destroyed brewery took place at the old site. Between 1948 and 1983 he was first chairman of the Cologne Brewery Association. In 1961 he became a city councilor, from March 28, 1963 mayor of Cologne for a legislative period. He was a co-founder of the Kölsch Convention signed in 1986 .

Sion family grave in Cologne's southern cemetery

Hans Sion was one of the initiators of the Cologne Brewery Trail in 1997 and died shortly afterwards in 1998. He was buried in the family grave in Cologne's southern cemetery (Hall 8). His son Hans Georg Sion has been running the brewery ever since. Strictly speaking, it is not a brewery, because after the destruction in 1942, it no longer brews itself. Rather, Sion has been part of the “Kölner Verbund” (Holding Brau & Brunnen ) since 1994 , which is brewed together with the Gilden , Kurfürsten and Sester-Kölsch brands in the Bergische Löwen brewery in Cologne-Mülheim .

Honors

In 1976 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class, and in 1995 the Great Cross of Merit of the FRG .
