American Recordings (1994) Unchained American III: Solitary Man (2000)

Unchained is the second album in the " American Recordings " series by country singer Johnny Cash . It was released in November 1996 and peaked at number 26 on the US country chart.

Songs and collaboration

For the album, Cash brought back musicians from Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers , the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Fleetwood Mac . Tom Petty's Southern Accents and the fervently sung Spiritual are the highlights of this album . During the recordings for this album, Cash's health was so bad that he had to take breaks every now and then. He had finally prepared the log cabin that he had built across from his house in the 1970s as a “Cash Cabin” studio, so that he could work on the recordings undisturbed without having to drive far. Like all of Cash's "American" albums, this one was produced by Rick Rubin .

In addition to three pieces composed by Cash himself, the album includes pieces by Soundgarden ( Rusty Cage ) and Beck ( Rowboat ) as well as guest appearances by Flea , bassist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, on "Spiritual" and Lindsey Buckingham and Mick Fleetwood on Sea of Heartbreak . The album also includes a cover version of Hank Snow 's I've Been Everywhere .

Award

Despite the fact that Unchained was almost completely ignored by American country radio stations and other Nashville institutions, it received a Grammy for Best Country Album. After winning the award, Cash and the record company posted a "thank you" to the Nashville country music industry in Billboard magazine in the form of the iconic 1969 photo taken during Cash's appearance in San Quentin Prison, showing Cash's middle finger pointing at the camera.
