chronology
Unchained American III: Solitary Man American IV: The Man Comes Around

American III: Solitary Man is the third music album in the " American Recordings " series by country singer Johnny Cash . It was released in October 2000 and peaked at number 11 on the country charts.

Between the release of the albums Unchained and Solitary Man , Cash suffered numerous health setbacks and was hospitalized for pneumonia , among other things . On Solitary Man , Cash's otherwise so firm baritone sounds brittle for the first time; This can be heard conspicuously in Tom Petty's I Won't Back Down , a title that both describes Cash's attitude and is at the same time the credo of the entire album. One of the most unusual tracks on this album for Cash is Nick Caves The Mercy Seat , the monologue of a prisoner waiting on death row and, according to Cash, one of his favorite songs.

Solitary Man was awarded a Grammy , as were the two previous albums produced by Rick Rubin . It won the award for the best male vocal performance in country.
