Tragic Songs of Life was the first complete album by the Louvin Brothers and is still one of the most important recordings in country music . On the cover you see Charlie and Ira Louvin in front of a desperate blonde who hands them a crumpled letter.

Three years after the album, the ballad Knoxville Girl was released as a single . It reached number 19 on the "Hot C&W Sides" billboard .

Don Yates describes Tragic Songs of Life in his no-depression review as arguably the best album by the Louvin Brothers, the centerpiece of which is their haunting version of the folk song In the Pines .

Allmusic's Mark Deming also rates the album as one of the best by the Louvin Brothers. It is a milestone in traditional country music that is still impressive even after 50 years.

Robert Dimery lists Tragic Songs of Life in his musical reference book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die .
