Memories Are Made of This

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Memories Are Made of This is a pop song that was released in the original version by Mindy Carson in 1955 , but only became world famous as a million-seller in the version by Dean Martin . As homesickness , the song was a million seller for Freddy Quinn and dominated the German hit parade in 1956.

History of origin

The genesis of the song is uncertain. It was composed in 1955 by the trio Terry Gilkyson , Richard Dehr and Frank Miller, which appeared as a folk trio under the name Terry Gilkyson & The Easy Riders from November 30, 1955. Since the trio did not make their first recordings for Columbia Records until May 31, 1956 , it is not considered the original interpreter of Memories Are Made of This .

The original version can be traced back to the singer Mindy Carson, as she had recorded Memories Are Made of This on September 9, 1955 for Columbia Records (# 40573). At number 53 on the pop hit parade, the song was initially forgotten. That changed, however, when the successful Dean Martin recorded a cover version of it on October 28, 1955 , with Terry Gilkyson & The Easy Riders as the background choir. The single (Capitol # 3295), released in November 1955, stayed at number one on the pop charts for six weeks and sold over a million copies. It came in 1956 not only in the USA , but also in Great Britain at number 1 in the charts. Dot Records wanted to participate in this success and also published a cover in November 1955 with Gale Storm (Dot # 15436), which reached number five.

Freddy Quinn's first single was released in June 1956 in a German version under the title Heimweh , which stayed at number 1 in the German charts for 14 weeks and clearly surpassed Dean Martin's success with eight million copies sold worldwide. Then the original version by Mindy Carson came onto the German market (Philips # 321 818 BF).

After the failed Hungarian popular uprising in 1956, the song was given a new text. As Honvágy-dal ( The Song of Homesickness ), the song was the unofficial anthem of the refugee revolutionaries and was recorded by Ida Boros , among others .
