De-Loused in the Comatorium is the debut album by the American band The Mars Volta . The concept album , released in 2003, is, both commercially and according to many music critics, the band's greatest success to date and is considered a milestone in modern progressive rock music .

background

The album tells the story of the fictional character Cerpin Taxt , inspired by Julio Venegas , a friend of the band. After a failed suicide attempt, he fell into a coma for weeks due to an overdose of morphine . After he woke up again, he was disfigured and paralyzed on one side, so that he finally jumped off a railway bridge into the heavy traffic and put an end to his life.

At the Drive-In , the predecessor band of The Mars Volta, played a tour as the opening act for Red Hot Chili Peppers , with whom they got along so well that their members Flea and John Frusciante also recorded the album. Rodriguez-Lopez said in an interview: “When we were left without a bass player shortly before the record production, Flea was the only person we could think of as a replacement, because on the one hand he is a good friend of ours and on the other hand he had no problem with ours To learn songs within three days. "

The album title is an excerpt from the song Eunuch Provocateur , which is on the EP Tremulant , which was released before the album .

The songs Inertiatic ESP and Televators were released as singles.

The album has sold more than 500,000 copies worldwide.

“[…], Even if the first hearing impressions are so energetic and breathtaking. Yes, “De-loused in the comatorium” takes your breath away from the start. Anyone exposed to the force of "Inertiatic ESP" can hardly decide whether to duck their head or shake it wildly in 7/4 time. Provided you feel able to follow the tangled breaks. "

"[...] filigree nagging far from the well-worn verse-verse-bridge-chorus and from the front stuff. [...] "De-Loused In The Comatorium" is a rock-hard and intense musical statement, [...] "
