Amputechture is the music album released on September 8, 2006 by the progressive rock band The Mars Volta . It is the third studio album by the band, which was founded in 2001.

Like the previous album, Amputechture was staged and produced by guitarist Omar Alfredo Rodriguez-Lopez and written by singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala . The compositions were implemented by Isaiah Ikey Owens (piano), Juan Alderete De La Pena (bass), drummer Jon Theodore, who left the band after completion, Red-Hot-Chili-Peppers guitarist John Frusciante , Paul Hinojos-Gonzales, the already worked on At the Drive-In as well as Marcel Rodriguez-Lopez, Adrian Terrazas-Gonzales and Sara Christina Gross. The recordings took place in Los Angeles, El Paso and Melbourne, Australia.

The fictitious term “Amputechture” is made up of the English words “ ampu tate” (= remove, remove, amputate), “ Architecture ” (= architecture) and “ Tech nology” (= technology, technique) and is thus a suitcase word . The cover shows a picture ( Big Mutant ) by the surrealist painter Jeff Jordan. His picture Dwarf Dancing can be seen on the disc .

After the first two albums had a thematic red thread, the lyrics on Amputechture manage without a leitmotif , but are again characterized by a very pessimistic mood with clearly recognizable religious references.
