The Avett Brothers are an American folk rock band from Concord , North Carolina .
Career
The brothers Scott and Seth Avett were initially members of the grunge band Nemo , which was based in Greenville . In addition, they founded a side project with band guitarist John Twomey and performed as Nemo Downstairs and The Back Porch Project . In 2000 they finally released an EP of the same name as The Avett Brothers . They continued under this name even after Nemo broke up, with Twomey soon being replaced by bassist Bob Crawford. With this line-up, their first album Country Was was released in 2002 .
In the following years the trio released the albums A Carolina Jubilee (2003), Mignonette (2004) and Four Thieves Gone: The Robbinsville Sessions (2006), a live album and the EP Gleam (2006). The three musicians were also involved in other projects: Crawford with New Jersey Transient , Seth Avett solo under the name Darling and the brothers together live as Oh What a Nightmare .
The band achieved their breakthrough in 2007 with the album Emotionalism , with which they entered the US charts for the first time. This was followed by a record deal with the major label Sony BMG / Columbia , which released I and Love and You in autumn 2009 . The record was produced by Rick Rubin , with whom the band members are now friends and who also appeared again as producer on the following records. I and Love and You became a success: It stayed at number one on the folk charts for three weeks and also made it into the top 20 of the Billboard 200 charts. The two following records The Carpenter (2012) and Magpie and the Dandelion (2013) followed on from this success and reached number four and number five respectively on the US charts.
At the beginning of March 2013 the band was on a European tour and performed in Zurich, Cologne and Munich, among others.
