Space Invader is the fourth solo album by American guitarist Ace Frehley , released on August 16, 2014 . It is the most successful release of the solo albums by all Kiss members.

background

In 2002, Frehley had left the band Kiss for the second time , of which he was a founding member and with whom he had toured again from 1996. In 2006, he overcame his alcohol - and drug addiction , in 2007, he began recording his album Anomaly , which was published in October 2009 and # 27 in the US album charts reached.

In 2013 Frehley signed a record deal for initially two albums with the label eOne and began work on his next project. For Space Invader , Frehley recorded all the guitar tracks himself and played the electric bass on almost every piece. Chris Wyse ( The Cult ) only took on this task for two titles . Matt Starr, who belonged to Frehley's touring band, played the drums. The album contained twelve tracks, and a “Limited Edition” was also released in digipak, which contained two bonus tracks and a poster. Space Invader also contained a cover version of Steve Miller -title The Joker . The cover picture was painted by Ken Kelly, who also designed the artwork for the Kiss albums Destroyer (1976) and Love Gun (1977). The picture shows the silhouette of Frehley playing guitar, standing on the gangway to the entrance of a rocket.

On June 3, 2014, the single Gimme a Feelin 'was pre-released. The CD album (Deluxe Edition) released on August 16, 2014 included an extended version of The Joker and a remix of the song Reckless as bonus tracks. There are various CD and vinyl editions, each with different track lists.

Space Invader became Frehley's most successful album release in the first week after it was released when it entered the US album charts at number nine . In the same week it reached number 16 in the Canadian album charts and number 42 in the German charts. In the second week the album was to be found in the US at number 49, the following week at 117.

The German magazine Rocks wrote that Space Invader, viewed soberly, did not have the potential to impress Frehley's former "Kiss colleagues to such an extent that they would turn the make-up off their faces out of sheer anger and frustration" . And yet the album is "like its predecessor Anomaly a thoroughly entertaining affair." Frehley is always "most inspired when he goes on excursions into space or other mysterious realms", while he seems strangely unmotivated when singing about earthly pleasures. Frehley is “not a great virtuoso and not a gifted singer,” but he has “character”, which makes “mediocre ideas very special”.

Classic Rock said the album was "more than a solid rock record". The quality level was "in no way to be expected in this form". Frehley riffs, soles and sings “with impeccable coolness through his songs, which could compete with those of his“ adversaries ”Stanley / Simmons and their album Monster “. Space Invader is "nothing less than the resurrection of a legend believed dead from a playful and creative point of view."

The US American magazine Rolling Stone emphasized, "Gene Simmons claimed that Ace Frehley did not deserve to wear the Kiss make-up," but this album says "something else." It was "nothing on it, that as rousing "as" his 78 smash hit New York Groove, "- but Space Invader has" the carefree attitude that Kiss albums of the 21st century lack ". If anything, it's "more of a Kiss album than Gene Simmons wants to admit".

The Munich evening newspaper made Space Invader album of the week and wrote that it was nice that Frehley was giving us “a charming pound on the ears” with the record. Charming because Frehley “doesn't care much about any trends” but “pulls his boots through consistently”. What is offered is “12 pithy hard rock with its incomparable guitar solos” - you couldn't want more.

Full text: Gene Simmons has claimed that Ace Frehley doesn't deserve to wear Kiss Kabuki clown paint, but the former Spaceman's first solo LP in five years says otherwise . Sure, the guitars don't always give off Frehley's trademark flames, and there isn't anything as catchy as his '78 solo smash, "New York Groove" - but Space Invader does have a carefree abandon that Kiss' 21st-century LPs have lacked. It also contains any number of lyrics cringe-worthy enough for his old band ("You're lookin 'so tight / I'm gonna make you feel just right," from the lubricious "What Every Girl Wants"). If anything, it's all a bit more Kiss-like than Simmons might care to admit.
