Up from the Ashes is a solo album by the US singer Don Dokken , released in 1990 , which he recorded after his band Dokken was temporarily disbanded . Originally he had intended to publish it under the name “Dokken”, but the former members of the group prevented this by a court of law. The band recruited for Up from the Ashes consisted of Don Dokken (vocals), John Norum ( guitar ), Billy White (guitar), Peter Baltes ( bass ) and Mikkey Dee ( drums ). As a guest musician appeared Glenn Hughes and Tony Franklin with the recordings. The album reached number 50 on the US album charts .

background

After the release of their fourth studio album Back for the Attack , the members of the band Dokken embarked on a two-month tour together with the headliners Van Halen, the Scorpions , Metallica and Kingdom Come in 1988 as part of the American Monsters of Rock festivals , which took place in June and July took place. But guitarist George Lynch and band founder Don Dokken were at this point completely divided and in the end only fulfilled their contractual obligations.

The group owed their record label Elektra Records yet another album and decided to release some recently recorded concerts of their Japan tour as a live album. After this was published under the title Beast from the East in March 1989, Don Dokken disbanded the group.

Singer and namesake Don Dokken wanted to venture a fresh start and recruited a new band: In addition to ex-Europe guitarist John Norum, they included Accept bassist Peter Baltes, who had already played on Dokken's debut album Breaking the Chains . In addition, the guitarist Billy White was hired, the drummer Mikkey Dee completed the quintet. The group was signed by Geffen and began recording their first album. The plan to continue under the name of Dokken failed due to the resistance of the three musicians who had been dismissed by Dokken, who took legal action against it and got it right.

The album, written and recorded with the help of Glenn Hughes (co-writer of When Love Finds a Fool ), Ken Mary (drums on The Hunger ), Mark Spiro ( Mirror, Mirror ), Kelly Hansen and Tony Franklin, was written and recorded by Don Dokken and Wyn Davis produced; it was released on October 21, 1990.

Quotes

In a 2011 interview, Don Dokken said of the breakup of his band in 1989:

There was no point anymore. And I could hardly get out: It was my group - I founded it, it was named after me . "

reception

Matthias Breusch wrote in Metal Hammer that “Meister und seine Vasallen” had “picked up where the legendary Dokken line-up left off. Great production, crystal clear sound, full of power, pleasant hooklines - everything as usual. ”You have to listen carefully to“ miss George Lynch ”next to Don Dokken, Messrs. Norum and White had“ done a great job in terms of guitar. ”It was without a doubt a "high-level album." Breusch awarded six out of seven possible points. The album reached number two in the magazine's “Soundcheck” with an average rating of 5.80 points (out of seven) by the editors. Vincent Jeffries of Allmusic wrote of the album that it was "a pale collection of easy-to-forget ballads" , only fans of the "most mediocre Dokken material" would have a chance to enjoy the album. The record was "well produced" , the performances (especially Norum's solo passages) were "clean" , but the songwriting and the lyrics were "at best standard and out of date when the album was released" . Even listeners who were heavily arrested in the 1980s would "probably not like" Up from the Ashes because the music "could not even begin to ignite the fire of Dokken's original band" .
